Hoppy Tom Hollow Water Extension Project

Background:

The private drinking water wells in the Hoppy Tom Hollow area were tested in 2022 for contaminants.  Several residences had contaminants above the recommended maximums.  McDowell County staff submitted these results to the NC Department of Environmental Quality, which encourage the County to apply for grants to assist with the well issues.

Project Information:

McDowell County applied for and received a grant from the NC Department of Environmental Quality to extend approximately 4,000 of water line along Hoppy Tom Hollow Road.  This line will be connected to an existing water line on US 70.  The project funding is paying for interested homeowners to connect to the water system at no cost to them (except for account deposits), which is atypical.

Funding:

NCDEQ has provided $915,000 for the water line extension and services.  Any cost overruns will be covered by American Rescue Plan Act funds provided to McDowell County.

Timeline:

The water line and services should be complete by the end of October 2024.
